Veronica (Ronnie) Benne, age 84, of Spring Hill, KS, passed away on October 3rd, 2019 at Travanse Memory Care in Olathe after enduring Alzheimer’s for nine years. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Fri., October 11, 2019 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main, Gardner, KS. Inurnment at St. Theresa’s Cemetery in Westphalia, KS at a later date. Visitation will be held at the church from 5 to 7 pm, Thur., October 10, 2019 followed by the Rosary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial Contributions be made to Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, Johnson County Fair Association or the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

She was born June 5th, 1935 at a farm in Westphalia, KS, the daughter of Frank and Agnes (Hagemann) Hellmer. She graduated from Westphalia High School as the valedictorian with the class of 1953. She worked as a bank teller in Westphalia for six years prior to marriage. Ronnie was united in marriage to William (Bill) Benne on June 27th, 1960 at Westphalia. This union was blessed with three sons. After marriage she spent the majority of her life with her husband in the Johnson County, KS area. She was a member of the Divine Mercy Parish, Gardner, KS, Daughters of Isabella, Johnson County Fair Association, Bookmark’s Book Club and many other organizations during her lifetime. She was an avid reader, and even as Alzheimer’s began to steal her mind and she could no longer read books, she continued participating in book club, patiently listening until the discussion mentioned sons or Catholics or Germans. At the mention of those topics she would perk up and let everyone know she was there and listening. In addition to being a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Ronnie was a loyal friend to many who remember her for her sweet and quiet ways with a gentle laugh that brightened the room. Her friendly smile and generous nature were often on display at many 4-H events and Johnson County Fair activities. She loved gatherings especially in her home where friends and family were always welcomed celebrating holidays, birthdays, graduations, cook-outs and wiener roasts. Another favorite pastime was traveling with friends and family and the annual Benne reunions at Grand Lake, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Agnes Hellmer; three brothers: Joseph, Francis and Leonard Hellmer; sister in-law, Jodi Hellmer and brother-in-law, Bob Coady. Ronnie is survived by her husband Bill of the home; sons: Dr. Paul (Christine) of Manhattan, KS, Duane of Lenexa, KS, Mark (Kathy) of Bucyrus, KS; eight grandchildren: Brayson (Katy) Benne, Cale Benne, Andrew Benne, Gage (Rachel) Benne, Jacob Benne, Hagan Benne, Eileen Benne, Megan Benne; two great-grandchildren: Liam and Jane Benne; three brothers: John Hellmer of Lodi, CA, Ernest (Doris) Hellmer of Omaha, NE, Jerome (Susan) Hellmer of Salina, KS; sister-in-laws: Bea Hellmer of Aurora, CO and Doris Coady of Des Moines, IA and many nieces and nephews.

I had the honor of knowing Mrs. Benne when I was in High School. I worked with her oldest son Paul and his wife Christine at the Olathe Library. I only visited her house in Spring Hill a few times but was always welcomed warmly into the Benne home. She was a sweet, quiet, kind, wonderful person. I am so happy I had the chance to know her.

My memory of my Aunt Ronnie is when I was young and my Mother told me that my U. Bill was getting married. Well that did not bode well with me, after all he was “MY” U. Bill. But then I met her and was so happy, she was so pretty and sweet. When she held my hand they were so soft. Then I decided it was ok for her to marry Uncle. This is a true story and I remember it like it was yesterday. Aunt Ronnie you will forever be in my heart. Rest in piece and please watch over us. Amen 🙏🏼 Your loving niece,
Mary Jane
