Richard “Gene” Gay, 86, of Gardner, KS passed away March 4, 2019. Visitation will be held 6:30 to 8:00 pm Mon., March 11, 2019 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111 with Rosary at 6:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am Tues., March 12, 2019 at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish, 555 W. Main, Gardner, KS. Burial follows at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Gardner, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the GEHS Alumni All School Reunion Scholarship Fund. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

Gene was born March 18, 1932 in rural Gardner, KS to Charles Roy and Margaret Virginia (Squires) Gay. He was a lifelong area resident who graduated from Gardner High School in 1950. Gene attended KU for one year. He married Roberta “Bert” Karnes on Oct. 17, 1951 in Gardner, KS. Gene served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955. He had a strong work ethic; working two jobs most of the time. His work experience included Gardner Grain, Gardner Standard Gas Station, AFG Industries, Spring Hill, KS and Gardner Liquor. Gene was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish and the Knights of Columbus. He coached Little League Baseball, was a 50 year member of the Gardner American Legion and served in the Color Guard with the Legion at Memorial Day. Gene loved gardening and farming and was a very special Dad. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter. Gene is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bert, of the home; children: Richard G. Gay, Jr., Beaverton, OR, Veronica V. and husband Gary Winters, Hillsdale, KS, Josephine L. Racicot, Gardner, KS, Donald W. and wife Corrine Gay, Osawatomie, KS and Jeanette L. and husband Mike Coltharp, Gardner, KS; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; siblings: Bernard L. and wife Marlyn Gay, Boulder, CO, Jacequline D. “Jackie” Gay, Emporia, KS and Gerald “Jerry” E. and wife Marcia Gay, Gardner, KS.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’d like to share some real hope with you. In Psalms 146:4 tells the condition of the dead. In Acts 24:15 and Isaiah 26:19 the Bible promises a resurrection of our.oved ones back to earth. When Jesus resurrected Lazarus from the dead, he brought him back to earth. That was a foregleam of the future. In Psalms 37:11+29 says man will live forever on the earth in peace. That was God’s original purpose, for man to live forever in the garden of eden. God’s purpose hasn’t changed. In Isaiah 45:18 says God created the earth to be inhabited. That’s why he gave his so. To die for us, John 3:16, so we could have everlasting life on earth. In Revelation 21:4 says there’ll be no more pain or death. Since there’s no pain or death in heaven, those are future conditions here on earth as God had intended.
