Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" A. Vohs (Vervynck)

Print
Elizabeth (Betty) Vohs passed peacefully from this world and back into the arms of her beloved husband, Jim, on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Dayspring Assisted Living in Plano, Texas. She was 92 years old. Born Elizabeth Ann Vervynck, September 11, 1926 in rural Gardner, Kansas to Thomas Cecil Vervynck and Mary DeGrande Vervynck, Belgium immigrants, she spent 91 of her years living within 8 miles of her birthplace. Betty graduated from Olathe High School in 1944, with plans to be a “history maker”. Her first job as a lumberyard secretary introduced Betty to James Raymond Vohs, whom she would marry in May 1948. Their only child, Darrell James completed the family in 1949. Though Betty had only one son, her helpful, welcoming spirit and acceptance of people “as is” gained her the title of substitute mom throughout her lifetime. She would listen compassionately, then tell the truth and expect one to do the right thing, but never preach. Her example spoke thousands of words.

When Betty stepped in to assist Bruce Funeral Home/Furniture Store with a temporary bookkeeping assignment in 1958, her gesture began a 28-year career. She retired in 1986 to enjoy travel, especially more frequent visits with her grandsons. Shortly thereafter, Betty assumed the role of full-time caregiver for Jim in his protracted battle with Parkinson Disease, standing faithfully and doggedly by his side for 12 years, until his death in 2002. When she couldn’t get out and about, she began watching sports, Jayhawk basketball and Royals baseball, as a hobby. Betty adjusted to life’s punches with a cheerful, undaunted spirit, living a proud, independent life until age 91, when circumstances called her to move closer to the children.

Betty loved a spotless house, punctual doctors, dining out, daily mass and breakfast with friends. She valued an honest day’s work, devotion to church and family, doing the right thing (correctly, the first time) for no personal benefit, and she possessed a unique, enduring sense of humor. Rubbing shoulders with Betty Vohs has made us all better people.

Betty is survived by her son Darrell J. Vohs and wife Amy; grandson Jacob P. Vohs and wife Debbie; grandson Joshua M. Vohs; great-granddaughters Isabel and Violet Vohs all of Plano, Texas; sister-in-law Doris Vervynck of Gardner, Kansas and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Raymond Vohs; parents Thomas and Mary Vervynck; brothers Henry Victor Vervynck and wife Betty and Thomas Vervynck all of Gardner, Kansas.

Mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Gardner, Kansas on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m., Fr. Adam Wilczak officiating. Rosary will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2019 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, Kansas, with visitation following 5:00-7:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Michael J.
