Obituary for Homer Edward Rankin

Homer Edward Rankin
Homer Rankin passed away September 16, 2018, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family at the Hospice House in Olathe, Ks. He was born on January 9, 1929 in Gardner, Kansas.

Homer was raised on a farm west of Gardner, attended Lanesfield Country School until 8th grade and graduated from Edgerton High School in 1945. After a two year stint in the U.S. Army, he returned home and met the “love of his life”, Patricia Higgins. They married on October 24th, 1953.

Homer and Pat have made their life in Gardner where they raised their 2 children, Mike and Melody, as well as built two successful businesses, Rankin’s Cabinet Shop and Pat’s Place Clothing Stores. Homer began his career as a carpenter and continued his passion for being a highly skilled craftsman all of his life. His eye for detail and creative design was evident in the many beautiful cabinets, homes and store remodels that he built in the Gardner and Olathe area. Homer was a passionate man with varied interests and enjoyed the many friends that shared them with him. Through the years, Homer enjoyed riding and caring for horses, riding motorcycles, playing pool, going hunting with his bird dogs, hitting the golf course, and playing poker with his buddies. In recent years, he was an avid reader and candy maker!

Homer is survived by his wife, Patricia Rankin and his two children; Mike Rankin and his wife Susan of Olathe, Kansas; Melody Rankin Gatti and her husband Joe Gatti of Lawrence, Kansas; 4 grandsons, Joe Rankin and wife Bernadette, Paul Rankin and wife Nastya, John Gatti and wife Emily, and Anthony Gatti and wife Jessica; 1 great grandson; Ben Kuhn-Rankin. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Ethel Rankin, brothers; Howard and Harold Rankin, sisters; Velma Campbell, Marcy Edwards, Merle Winters, and Dorothy Kelleher.

A Celebration of Life celebrating Homer’s life and legacy will be held at the Gardner Presbyterian Church 2:00 pm Sat., Dec. 15, 2018. 1:00 pm Visitation before the service at the church. A private burial will follow at the Gardner Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Olathe Health Hospice House and the Gardner Presbyterian Church.
