Marilyn Louise Gonzalez
Marilyn Louise Gonzalez, 98, of Olathe, KS passed away April 30, 2018 at the Healthcare Resort of Olathe. Celebration of Life will be held 12:00 noon on Sun., May 20, 2018 at De Soto United Methodist Church, 8760 Killcreek Rd., De Soto, KS 66018. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the De Soto United Methodist Church. Condolences may be left at

Marilyn was born Sept. 15, 1919 in Summerville, SC to Fred and Maud C. (Magill) Singletary. When she was a young child, the family moved to New York City where she spent her formative years. Marilyn graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx at age 16 in 1935. Although she was offered a scholarship to Lincoln University, she was unable to attend; she remained in New York working at the Flower Fifth Avenue Hospital.

In 1941, she married Reginald Gonzalez and started a family that included five sons. The family lived in Montreal, Philadelphia, and two other cities in Massachusetts before settling in Belmont, MA as a single mother. She remained there for the next 47 years.

While raising her family, Marilyn studied art and became a prolific artist in many mediums. She exhibited works in regional expositions, was commissioned to paint murals and other art work, and taught art classes on a volunteer basis. At various times, she was involved in many civic groups including the Speaker's Club, the Art League, the League of Woman Voters, the church Vestry, and the Design and Planning Committee for the Regional Technical School. She worked for Teradyne as an Electronic Technician for 25 years; retiring in 1988. Marilyn enjoyed traveling and over the years visited four continents and the Arctic Circle. Marilyn moved to Johnson County in 2006 where she attended the De Soto United Methodist Church. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lucelia Billingy. Marilyn is survived by her five sons: Ramon Gonzalez, Torrance, CA; Victor and wife Yuan-Hsiu Gonzalez, Deerfield, MA; Diego and wife Eileen Gonzalez, Sanford, ME; Federico and wife Karen Gonzalez, Olathe, KS; Luis Gonzalez, Worcester, MA and nine grandchildren.
