Betty L. VanGoethem, 84, of Gardner passed away October 13, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am on Wednesday, October 18th at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main, Gardner, KS 66030. Burial following at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Gardner. Visitation 6-8 pm Tuesday, October 17th, with Rosary following at 8 pm at Bruce Funeral Home, 106 S. Center, Gardner, KS 66030 913-856-7111. Memorial contributions may be made to the Divine Mercy Catholic Church Building Fund. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

Betty was born November 25, 1932 in Olathe, KS to Sherman Rosco and Anna Jane (Wentworth) Hougland. She graduated from Olathe High School in 1950. Betty married Paul VanGoethem on October 8, 1960 in Gardner, KS. She worked as a secretary for McGee Abstract from 1950-1955 and Johnson County Title from 1955-1964, both in Olathe. Through the 1980’s-1990’s, Betty was the cafeteria manager for USD #231. She was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Gardner. Betty enjoyed spending time with the ladies of Friday Friends and Altar Society. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and sewing. Betty will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bill Hougland. She is survived by her husband, Paul of the home; sons: Kevin and Lesley VanGoethem of Winter Springs, FL, Jim and Lori VanGoethem of McPherson, KS, and Travis and Kimberly VanGoethem of Blue Springs, MO; daughter, Margaret and Eric Klassen of Beatrice, NE, sister-in-law, Helen Hougland, and three grandsons; Jori and Dawson VanGoethem and Mitchel Klassen.
