Shirley Jean Penner, 69, of De Soto, KS passed away Sept. 29, 2017. Funeral service 10:00 am Fri., Oct. 6, 2017 at De Soto United Methodist Church, 8760 Kill Creek Rd., De Soto, KS. Burial follows at De Soto Cemetery, De Soto, KS. Visitation 6:00 to 7:30 pm Thur., Oct. 5, 2017 at the church with an Eastern Star Service at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

Shirley was born April 4, 1948 in Kansas City, MO to Delbert and Oleta (Bates) Christy. She was a lifelong area resident who graduated from De Soto High School in 1966. Shirley married Louis “Leland” Penner on Nov. 3, 1975 in Las Vegas, NV. She worked in food service for the De Soto School District # 232 for five years; retiring in 1980. Shirley was a member of the De Soto United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She loved animals, worked on the farm and at Penner’s Cycle Barn in De Soto. Shirley enjoyed traveling and riding motorcycles. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Shirley is survived by her husband, Leland, of the home; children: John and wife Zen Penner, Kapaau, HI, Doug and wife Bonnie Penner, Shawnee, KS, Paul and wife Cyndi Penner, De Soto, KS and Gail and husband Howard Funk, Lawrence, KS; brother, Phil Christy, Blue Spring, MO; sisters: Candy Buxton, Springfield, MO and Vicki and husband Joel Vaslay, Independence, MO; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four nephews; one niece and two great-great grandsons.
