Doris Mae (Huff) Vail, 82, of Olathe, KS passed away Aug. 20, 2017 at Healthcare Resort of Olathe. Funeral 3:00 pm Thurs, Aug. 24, 2017 at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111. Visitation 6:30 to 7:30 Thur., Aug. 24, 2017 at Travanse Living, 101 W. 151st St., Olathe, KS. Burial 2:00 pm Fri., Aug. 25, 2017 at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Boonville, MO. Flowers are encouraged and memorial contributions may be made to Project Linus or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be left at

Doris was born July 2, 1935 in Boonville, MO to Calvin T. and Mary Melvina (Debo) Huff. She grew up in Boonville, MO where she graduated from Boonville High School in 1953. Doris attended Central Methodist College (now Central Methodist Univ.) in Fayette, MO for two years and transferred to the occupational therapy program at Washington Univ. She married Don J. Vail, Jr. on May 8, 1958 in Columbia, MO. Doris graduated from Washington Univ. in 1958 and worked on and off as an Occupational Therapist while raising their two children. Don was an entomologist for the Food and Drug Admin. in Kansas City and then Atlanta, GA. Upon Don’s retirement from the FDA they moved to Doris’ hometown of Boonville and ran Food Sanitation Training Services for 17 years. They moved to Olathe in 2006 to be closer to their children. Doris was an avid knitter and enjoyed other fiber arts including sewing. Her family members always had sweaters, hats, clothes and Christmas decorations. She enjoyed Sunday dinners with family and will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: William T. and Thomas Eugene Huff. Doris is survived by her husband, Don, Olathe, KS; daughter, Robin and husband David Rayburn, Olathe, KS; son, Forrest and wife Cathy Vail, Olathe, KS; brother, Donald and wife Tina Huff, Marshall, MO; brother-in-law, Jim and wife Linda Vail, Ballwin, MO; six grandchildren: Joshua, Laura, Timothy, Benjamin, Amanda and Daniel Vail and several nieces and nephews.
