Bernita Wetherington
Bernita Mae Wetherington, 73, of Wellsville, KS, passed away March 1, 2017 at the Olathe Medical Center. Per her wishes, she’ll be cremated. Memorial Service will be 4:00 pm Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the First Baptist Church, 324 E. Shawnee St., Gardner, KS 66030. Memorial Contributions may be made to Community and Family Support Services (CFSS), formerly known as the Gardner Food Pantry. Arrangements by: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS 913-856-7111. Bernita was born January 4, 1944 in Great Bend, KS to Clydeen June (Barnes) Shackelford, and was raised by her mother and step-father, Carter Keith Shackelford. She grew up in Western Kansas, moving frequently because of her dad’s construction jobs. Bernita graduated from Burlingame High School in 1962. She married her first husband and gave birth to twin girls. After divorcing she moved to Gardner, where she remarried, and had her son. A well-known fixture of Gardner, KS, she was heavily involved in the community, through her family, her work at Wardrobe Cleaners for 28 years, and as a member of the First Baptist Church of Gardner. Bernita enjoyed quilting and sewing, and she loved spending time with her family, especially when they took road trips. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Bernita was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Norman Garrison and former husband, William Kivitter. She is survived by her former husband, James Wetherington of Gardner, KS; children: Carla J. and husband Damon Betik of Ennis, TX, Scharla O. and husband Donald Burns of Pittsburg, KS and Carter J. and wife Cheryl Wetherington of Gardner, KS; siblings: Glenda Kuzma of Sorrento, FL, Beulah McManus of Stewartsville, MO, and LeWayne Garrison of Pueblo, CO; six grandchildren: Colleen, Megan, Caroline, Kayla, Sydney and Hannah.
